I think different experiences make different people happy....For some it is about throwing large parties and inviting everybody they know....Why not? You live once, and if they can afford it they should. However that need not be pressure for others to follow suit or get into a comparison mode. I personally like spending on travels or having a good meal. Not a huge fan of big gatherings...To each his own, I guess.
