I think many of us prioritize the wrong things when it comes to finding a partner. For me its always personality, kindness and conscientiousness over looks. But those things take time to be figured out. I personally feel if you find a profile interesting and it matches what you are looking for then you should definitely check him/her out irrespective of looks. This is coming from a person with very average looks :D

I have realized that if you choose someone based solely on attraction without due consideration and thought over their other qualities, you will most often make the wrong choice. I know from whatever little experience that there are all kinds out there with not so pure intentions.

Also, if I were asked for advice from a male friend, I would be more than happy to help. That is what friends are for.
