That is always a sticky situation. To choose between survival and standing up for the right. Survival very often brings one down to the knees. Unless you have some solid support system, most people will buckle towards the former i.e choose survival. It may look like the wise thing to do in certain select situations but not exactly the morally and ethically right thing to do.

The recent incident in Kerala where the veterinary student was tortured to death really had me thinking about the same. A bunch of shit scared students who were so scared for their lives that none of them mustered the courage to call for help or intervene. Governments of certain countries are way more powerful.
