The problem is India's per capita GDP will always remain dismal considering the sheer numbers here. So even if we rank 5th overall in GDP, we still have a long long way to go for it to reflect in our individual well being. Also being 126th on the happiness index is just hogwash. They supposedly ask about 1000 people and extrapolate the findings as a statistical average for 1.4 billion. If you look at the number of people who are depressed or taking therapy, some western countries should top the list simply because of less family bonding, higher divorce rates etc. The work life balance being skewed is a real thing though. There if you are paid for 8 hours , you are expected to be there for 8 hours and paid extra for extra hours. Here you are labelled with not so colorful adjectives if you don't work altruistically. It is stupid to the core.
